The status quo: Godzilla's still King of the Monsters and doing his thing protecting humans and fighting titans, but destroying cities in the process (Rome). Kong is lonely in Hollow Earth and Monarch are still searching for ways to control titans.
The kid from the last movie is back and experiences visions of something evil in Hollow Earth, which we see after Kong inadvertently unleashes a tribe of evil orangutan titans similar to Kong. The leader of them - the Scar King - wants revenge on Godzilla after Godzilla defeated him thousands of years ago and trapped him in the Hollow Earth.
The Scar King found something that allows him to control the very first ancient titan Shimu - who caused the first ice age - and sends it to fight Godzilla.
Apparently this titan may have cameoed in a recent Call of Duty game?
The movie totally feels like a Saturday morning cartoon and reality is thrown out the window. Remember how it felt crazy that mechagodzilla even existed given the tech level in the earlier movies? That x10. Kong gets cyber-upgrades by the end of the movie and the final battle is insane. Kong becomes a mentor/father figure to a young orangutan and is no longer lonely. What happens to Godzilla is unclear.
The highlights of the movie are (surprisingly) the human characters who are fun and heartfelt, and there is clearly a genuine understanding that humans were the weaker element of the earlier movies.
