A new Hunger Games novel by author Suzanne Collins will be published on March 18, 2025, publisher Scholastic announced today. Sunrise on the Reapingwill be the fifth in the dystopian book series.
The new book will be set 24 years before the original Hunger Games novel and 40 years after the most recent installment The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
While Collins pointed to such influences as Greek mythology and Roman gladiators for her earlier entries in the series, she said the new one owes a nod to Enlightenment philosopher David Hume.
“With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.’ The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”
