Focus Features has taken worldwide rights to Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest project Bugonia, the remake of South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet, which sees the Greek director reunite yet again with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

Bugonia follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. It’s another reteam for Lanthimos with producers Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures, who will produce with Lanthimos, Square Peg’s Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen, Stone via her Fruit Tree banner, Miky Lee and Jerry Ko of CJ ENM.

Wenn man Lanthimos und Stone liest, kann man nur voller Vorfreude sein! Vor Ende 2025 bzw. 2026 kommt der Film aber bestimmt nicht raus.
 
Habe Save the Green Planet gesehen und hat mir auch gefallen, aber brauche kein Remake davon. Wieso macht ausgerechnet Lanthimos, dessen Filme bisher alle originell und kreativ waren, ein Remake? Das finde ich ehrlich gesagt enttäuschend und passt für mich gar nicht. Vorfreude hält sich in Grenzen.
 
Ich denke nicht, dass es ein klassisches Remake wird, wenn man sich seine Filme so anschaut. Neben dem Plot wird er das Original sicher in seinen markanten Stil ummünzen, siehe etwa die Fischaugeperspektive, die verfolgenden Kamerafahrten oder die Grundstimmung im Allgemeinen, denke ich zumindest.
 
Der Starttermin in den US/Kanada wurde für 31.10. angekündigt. Universal Pictures vertreibt international. Ein erster Trailer dürfte nicht mehr lange auf sich warten lassen.

The film will open in select theaters on Oct. 24 before expanding nationwide on Oct. 31. That’s slightly earlier than the original release date of Nov. 7. Focus Features is rolling out “Bugonia” in the U.S. and Canada while Universal Pictures, the specialty studio’s parent company, will handle international distribution.
