Uwe Boll Reboots ‘Alone in the Dark’ (Exclusive)​

It seems you can’t keep a good Boll down.

Maverick German director Uwe Boll is rebooting the horror action franchise Alone in the Dark. Boll´s Event Films has optioned the film rights to the hit survival horror video game series from publisher THQ Nordic. The H.P. Lovecraft-inspired franchise, which follows private detective Edward Carnby in his fight against the undead, has spawned seven games and sold millions of units worldwide.

Boll adapted Alone in the Dark as a feature film in 2005, starring Christian Slater and Tara Reid. While widely panned by critics then and now, the film has since achieved a sort of cult status.

For the reboot, Boll said he plans to stay closer to the original game, following the story of the latest 2024 release.

“We will capture the spirit and the era of the original games and follow the story of the new game,” said Boll, noting, “we can´t wait to reboot the franchise and cast our new Edward Carnby.”

Boll’s production partner Michael Roesch said they were also looking to develop the franchise into a TV series.

Boll became notorious among video game fans in the early 2000s for his indie game adaptations, which often took liberties with the original material. In addition to Alone in the Dark, he directed versions of House of the Dead (2003), Bloodrayne (2005), Far Cry (2008) and In the Name of the King (2007), the latter starring Jason Statham.

Boll famously challenged his fiercest online critics to step into the boxing ring with him, and literally beat them senseless.

Boll and Roesch are also working on Return to Zombie Island, a sort of sequel to House of the Dead, which picks up with characters from the original movie, 23 years on. All the original cast are returning.

Boll and Roesch point to the success of The Minecraft Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog films as evidence of renewed market interest in video game adaptations. FX has announced a new Far Cry TV series, and Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson has signed to do a The House of the Dead reboot.

The ever-prolific Boll is in postproduction on two back-to-back sequels of his 2024 cop thriller First Shift, which was a surprise hit on Paramount+, and the director has wrapped on his upcoming action thriller Citizen Vigilante, starring Armie Hammer.

Mein erster Gedanke "oh dieses Mal vielleicht nicht komplett beschissen" und dann lese ich, dass Uwe Boll schon wieder seine Finger im Spiel hat.

Ja, dachte ich mir auch direkt.

Ich glaube aber, generell düfte es "Alone in the Dark" als Verfilmung schwer haben. Dafür sind irgendwie auch schon die Spiele zu obskur und in der Tonalität uneinheitlich.

Christophe Gans hat es mit Silent Hill auch hinbekommen, mit einem fähigen Regi könnte das durchaus klappen.

Das ist doch hoffentlich ein verfrühter Aprilscherz. Uwe Boll hat schon beim ersten Film bewiesen, dass er mit der Spiele-Reihe absolut nichts anzufangen weiß.

Dito... gerade weil ich, bevor ich gelesen habe, dass Boll wieder beteiligt ist, noch die Hoffnung hatte, da könnte was halbwegs vernünftiges mit David Harbour und Jodie Comer in den Hauptrollen dabei rauskommen, die ja beim letzten Spiel auch involviert waren.

Aber so kann man das komplett ausschließen. Ich glaube das Problem ist einfach, dass Boll noch die Filmrechte hält und durch das neue Spiel (und weil dadurch die Marke momentan wieder etwas bekannter geworden ist) hat er vermutlich leichter Leute gefunden, die das ganze Finanzieren.

Dass es mit fähigen Leuten klappen kann, davon gehe ich schon aus - ich glaube aber, dass die Reihe einfach schwerer zu greifen ist, was eine Verfilmung schwerer macht. Bei "Silent Hill" sind Inhalt und Stil durch die ersten beiden Spiele schon recht gefestigt, aber die "Alone in the Dark"-Reihe ist irgendwie Kraut und Rüben. Wir haben lose die ersten drei Spiele, die mit ihrem Geisterhaus- und Geisterstadt-Setting nicht so viel "Fleisch" liefern, dann haben wir "The New Nightmare", der das Ganze updatet und damit vielleicht auch ein bisschen mehr Material liefern und dann haben die beiden Reboots, wovon das 2008er-Game totales Chaos ist und das von 2024 auch wieder komplett anders ist. Bei "Alone in the Dark" fehlt m.E. die "Identität" der Reihe. Bei anderen (verfilmten) Horror-Reihen ist das klarer: "Resident Evil" ist das mit den Zombies (bzw. später das mit den Mutationen und Biowaffen), "Silent Hill" das mit dieser Stadt im Nebel etc. - aber was ist "Alone in the Dark" bzw. was macht die Reihe aus?

Das ist leider das Hauptproblem mit Boll: Er ist ein jämmerlicher Regisseur, aber - verdammt - Studios/Produzenten umgarnen und Kohle zusammenkratzen, DAS kann er. Der Mann muss wohl Meister des Pitch Meetings sein .

was ist "Alone in the Dark" bzw. was macht die Reihe aus?

Wenn man sich auf "The New Nightmare" und 2008/"Inferno" stützen würde, ein kerniger Edward Carnby. Geschichte: beginnend als spannder Lovecraft-Grusel, der sich nach und nach mehr richtig Action orientiert.

Sinnvoller wäre es allerdings sich auf den aktuellen Teil und seine zwei Protagonisten zu stützen. Emily Hartwood (Jodie Comer) und den auf paranormale Ereignisse spezialisierten Privatdetektiv Edward Carnby (David Harbour). Da sind dem Boll doch schon die Darsteller zu teuer...
